Heart of Dakota - Beyond, Bigger, and Drawn Into The Heart of Reading!

Wow!  I can't believe that on Monday I will have a 2nd grader and a 4th grader.  It really just doesn't seem possible.  I am looking forward to a wonderful year with them, though.  There are so many things they are going to do, experience, and learn this year.  We'll be adding in a Science book of our own which starts with 6 weeks of experimenting with M&Ms!

Sammy will be using DITHOR this year for the first time.  He is excited about all of the books that he will get to read this year.  Ian will be finishing his phonics program and then moving to the Emerging Readers program.  He is excited to learn to read better.

Well, I better get moving!  My new school schedule starts tonight so I can be up and ready in the morning!

It's Been Awhile!

It has been a while since I've posted anything, but I decided to try and start blogging again. That way you all can keep up with what is going on with the kids!

Sammy just got back from 3 days (2 nights) at church camp. He had SO much fun! He really learned a lot and can't wait to go back next year. He will be starting 2nd grade in the fall. (I can't believe I have a 2nd grader!!) He will start the year doing 3rd grade math, though. He did both 1st and 2nd grade math this year. He just seems to "get" math. It just clicks for him.

Ian is excited to be heading to Safety Town in a few weeks. I still can't believe that he will be in Kindergarten in the fall. He is growing up so fast and constantly makes me laugh!

Both of the boys are taking Kung Fu lessons this summer. They seem to like it. It is hard for Ian because they have to sit and be quiet at the beginning of each lesson. They love going there and playing in the Splash Park before their lesson, though!

Well, off to another adventure! We are camping in the living room tonight!!

Christmas is Coming!

I can't believe that it is almost Christmas! This always seems to be such a hectic time of year. We have musicals, presents to buy and wrap, parties to go to, and so much more. It is so easy to lose focus during this busy, busy season! We definitely want our kids to remember the TRUE reason for this season. We have tried so hard to find activities that will remind them and teach them about Jesus and God's plan for our life.

We found a really neat church in Bellville. They do something called "Experience Bethlehem" every year. It is the COOLEST thing! The kids absolutely love it. You go through these rooms where they have stations or "mini-dramas" set up to tell the Christmas story. After you go through all the rooms, you go into "Bethlehem." They give you coins to spend at the shops. It is all set up like Bethlehem would have been. At the fish market, you can buy a cup full of goldfish crackers. The winery sold grape juice. The had a flower shop, a bakery, and even a JAIL! In the back of the room was a live nativity with animals the kids could pet. It was really really neat! We have decided to make it a yearly event for our family.

Another thing that we are doing this year is STOPPING THE MADNESS!! It seems as though our families are growing larger by the minute so we are not exchanging gifts this year with Dan's siblings and their families. We are having a birthday party for Jesus and buying gifts for babies that will be donated to Richland Pregnancy Services. This is a really good organization that offers support for women and teens that find out they are pregnant. They also try to provide them with information about abortion and steer them towards alternatives. The ladies can earn baby bucks by attending classes and things and they can use their bucks to "purchase" items. I am also going to start volunteering there!

We truly hope that we can teach our children the reason that we celebrate so that they will be able to celebrate right along with us!

The musical went WONDERFULLY! I forgot my lines once during the first service, but we recovered well. The second service was better for me, but a couple of kids forgot their lines that time! Oh Well! The most important thing is that we did our best! I think I will forever be remembered by the kids at church as "Nannie O," though! (I guess there are worse things they could remember me for!!)

I pray that all of my friends have a safe and joyous CHRISTmas season!

I'm Getting Nervous!

Well, the Christmas musical is only 4 days away! We have to build the set tomorrow. Our technical rehearsal is Friday night, the dress rehearsal is Saturday, and we are performing during both services on Sunday morning. I have been fine all this time, but today I started to get nervous! I hope I remember my lines and that everything goes smoothly! I think I am most nervous about singing. The music is hard to hear sometimes and I just want it to all go ok. (Of course, Jarrad will tell me I sang the wrong note when it's over, but he won't even be there!) I know it will all work out, it always does!

We are going to go finish our Christmas shopping today. We just have a few gift cards to pick up and then we are done! WOO HOO! I think we are actually going to shop for us today! We got some gift cards that are burning a hole in Dan's pocket. He wants to buy an expresso maker.

I am in the middle of planning the birthday party of McElvain Group Homes for December. We are going to have breakfast with Santa (for dinner) and play some winter games. We are planning to end the whole thing with a SNOWBALL FIGHT! (Inside! Of course, we will be using tissue paper snowballs.) It should be a lot of fun. I know Sammy and Ian will enjoy it!

It is a really busy Christmas season. We are having fun, though!!!

Life is never boring!

As the mom to two young sons, life is never boring! I heard an awesome quote about boys recently. I don't know where it originated, but there is a whole lot of truth to it!! If you keep them busy they do great, but if you let them get bored they will disassemble your house board by board! I know that is definitely true around our house!

Sammy and Ian found a perfect opportunity to disassemble while I was in the shower last week. We have foam tile letters as the flooring in our playroom. They not only pulled it up, but they also pulled all of the letters out and even popped out the little pieces inside the A's, B's, etc. It was a mess! I have been working diligently to get it all put back together. It is sure a job! I told Sammy that he couldn't go into the playroom for 3 days while I worked on putting it back together. He started sobbing and said, "For 100 years?!?" I told him that I said 3 days. He exclaimed, "Is that LONGER than 100 years?!?!?" He was too cute!!

We are busy, busy, busy! The Christmas season is in full swing. Dan and I are currently working on making costumes for "The One and Only Original Christmas Factory." That is the children's musical that we decided to do this year at church. I am playing the role of "Nannie O." the sweet little old lady that runs that factory. It should be a lot of fun! Dan isn't helping actually MAKE the costumes, but he is watching the kids so that I can make them! That is probably the biggest help of all! I am truly blessed to have a husband that loves his kids and enjoys spending time with them. My dad is building the set. I can't wait to see it! He is so good to go along with my crazy ideas!! We went to Lowe's and got all of the supplies that we needed and he is at home building like crazy.

Well, I better go see what adventures Sammy and Ian have in store for me today!
